Ο Λίνος Κόκοτος γεννήθηκε στο Αγρίνιο ενώ το 1951 μετακόμισε με την οικογένειά του στην Αθήνα όπου και μεγάλωσε. Το ακορντεόν κάποιων φίλων στη γειτονιά του στο Αιγάλεω ήταν η πρώτη του γνωριμία με τη μουσική. Το 1961 γράφεται στο Ωδείο Αθηνών. Τα πρώτα του τραγούδια τα γράφει και τα εκτελεί με τη χορωδία του Γυμνασίου.
Σιγά-σιγά αρκετά τραγούδια του αρχίζουν και συγκεντρώνονται στα συρτάρια του. Το 1966 τα παρουσιάζει για πρώτη φορά σε μπουάτ της Πλάκας, τις “Εσπερίδες”. Δύο από τα τραγούδια αυτά, το «Μικρό παιδί»και το «Ένα απόβραδο» ήταν η αιτία να γυρίσει σε ηλικία 19 ετών, τον πρώτο του μικρό δίσκο στην εταιρεία LYRA, του Αλέκου Πατσιφά. Τραγουδήθηκαν από τον Γιώργο Ζωγράφο. Με το πρώτο τους άκουσμα γίνονται επιτυχίες που τραγουδιούνται μέχρι σήμερα.
Η επιτυχία του πρώτου δίσκου φέρνει έναν δεύτερο με τα τραγούδια «Ένα μαχαίρι»και «Χάθηκαν οι ώρες» που γίνονται επιτυχίες με ερμηνευτή τον Γιάννη Πουλόπουλο.
Ο πρώτος του μεγάλος δίσκος με τον τίτλο «Οι ώρες», σε στίχους Αργύρη Βεργόπουλου και Άκου Δασκαλόπουλου ακολουθεί. Τα τραγούδια του δίσκου αυτού ερμηνεύουν ο Γιάννης Πουλόπουλος, Γιώργος Ζωγράφος, Ρένα Κουμιώτη και Μιχάλης Βιολάρης.
Το 1971 γυρίζει το L.P. «Ο κήπος» πάνω σε στίχους Άκου Δασκαλόπουλου που τραγουδήθηκε από τους Γιάννη Πουλόπουλου, Έλενα Κυρανά, Θανάση Γκαϊφίλια και Μαρία Δουράκη.
Το 1972 ο Λίνος Κόκοτος μελοποιεί τον κύκλο του Οδυσσέα Ελύτη «Θαλασσινό Τριφύλλι» που αποτελεί σταθμό στο χώρο του έντεχνου λαϊκού τραγουδιού. Το πάντρεμα της μουσικής του με τα λόγια του μεγάλου ποιητή ήταν από τις πιο πετυχημένες στιγμές στην καριέρα του. Τα τραγούδια αυτά τραγουδήθηκαν από την Ρένα Κουμιώτη και τον Μιχάλη Βιολάρη.
Το 1975 συναντιέται με τον Λευτέρη Παπαδόπουλο ο οποίος γνώριζε τον Λίνο Κόκοτο μέσα από την μέχρι τότε δουλειά του. Γράφουν μαζί μια σειρά τραγουδιών με τον γενικό τίτλο «Αποχαιρετισμός» με ερμηνευτές τη Δήμητρα Γαλάνη και τον Μανώλη Μητσιά.
Το 1976 γράφει τη μουσική στο παιδικό θεατρικό έργο του Γιώργου Αρμένη «Το όνειρο και οι περιπέτειες του Τζιτζιρή», που ανέβασε το Θέατρο Τέχνης του Κάρολου Κουν.
Το 1978 συνεργάζεται με έναν άλλο μεγάλο ποιητή, το Δημήτρη Χριστοδούλου. Μια σειρά από τραγούδια με τον τίτλο «Αντιπολεμικά», υλοποιούνται μαζί με τον ποιητή σε δισκογραφική δουλειά με ερμηνευτή τον Νίκο Ξυλούρη.
Η επόμενη δισκογραφική του δουλειά είναι η συλλογή «Να ‘ταν η ζωή τραγούδι» σε στίχους του Δ. Χριστοδούλου, Λ. Παπαδόπουλου, Γ. Νεγρεπόντη, Κ. Τριπολίτη και Α. Δασκαλόπουλου. Στο δίσκο αυτό τραγουδούν οι Γλυκερία, Π. Αστεριάδη, Κ. Λεοντίδης.
Ακολουθεί η συλλογή «Το ποτάμι» με ερμηνευτές τους Σωτηρία Μπέλλου, Ελένη Τσαγκαράκη και Κώστα Λεοντίδη και ο δίσκος
«Ζωγραφιές και χρώματα» όπου τραγουδούν οι Μανώλης Μητσιάς, Νίκος Ανδρουλάκης κ.ά.
Εκτός από τα τραγούδια ο Λίνος Κόκοτος έχει γράψει τη μουσική για πολλές θεατρικές παραστάσεις (Θέατρο Τέχνης, Κ.Θ.Β.Ε.) για αρκετά περιφερειακά θέατρα και ελεύθερους θιάσους και για τον κινηματογράφο. Έχει συνεργαστεί τον Μανόλη Φιλιππάκη έχοντας γράψει μουσική για πολλά από τα “60 σύγχρονα παιχνιδοτράγουδα”, καθώς και για άλλα τραγούδια που πρόκειται να κυκλοφορήσουν σύντομα. Τέλος, μόλις κυκλοφόρησε μία ολοκαίνουρια μουσικο-ποιητική εργασία, όπου ο Λίνος Κόκοτος είναι ο συνθέτης, σε πέντε τραγούδια σε ποίηση Βέρας Βασιλείου – Πέτσα που εντάχθηκαν στο CD με τίτλο ”Βορεινό παράθυρο”.
